The aim of this course is to prepare in the use of VHF for routine and emergency procedures. Attendees will gain a basic knowledge of radio operation by the use of practice radios to make short VHF calls. At the end of the course, the participant will be knowledgeable in routine Radio Operator duties, duties in emergency response arrangements and the actions required of a Radio Operator during rig operations.

  • General principles and basic features of the maritime mobile service relevant to vessel subject under the SOLAS convention 
  • Detailed working knowledge of various types of short range radio equipment 
  • Radiotelephone channels 
  • Portable two-way VHF radiotelephone apparatus 
  • Digital Selective Calling (DSC) 
  • Maritime Mobile Service Identity (MMSI) number system 
  • Call categorization and priority 
  • Call telecommand and traffic information 
  • Operational procedures of the GMDSS subsystems and equipment 
  • Protection of distress frequencies 
  • Search and Rescue Radar Transponder 
  • Operational Procedures and regulations for VHF radiotelephone communications 
  • Practical traffic routines
